Royal National Theatre

Royal National Theatre
The National Theatre was established by Parliament in 1949, although the company’s opening performance was delayed until 1963 when Lawrence Olivier directed Peter O’Toole in Hamlet. The company lacked a permanent home until the GLC donated the present South Bank site. The ‘brutalist’ concrete and glass structure of the National Theatre was designed by Denys Lasdun and Partners and opened in 1976 under the directorship of Peter Hall. The National Theatre building houses three theatres: the Olivier, an open stage amphitheatre; the Lyttelton, a proscenium arch stage; and the Cottesloe studio theatre. To celebrate its silver anniversary in 1988, the National was granted the title ‘Royal’.
